I miss Folkface

I miss you guys! I miss our sounds. I miss our cooking. I miss our playing. I miss our drinking. I miss our bonding. I miss our arranging. I miss our joy. If I have to go back north, how will I survive without you? Love always, Muffy.

Muffy Love

Hey Folkfacers. My loves. I've just landed in Toronto, after journeys to Vancouver, Port Moody, Cumberland, Victoria, and East Sooke. The taxation nightmare on hold for the moment while I visit my sister in T.O. and sit in with Ferron this coming weekend. Missing you all and hoping we get to play before the winds shift.
Love,
Muffy

Lynxy presents FF news

hello folkers,
well last night was small but full of special moments, like a visit from Shakey Dave Pollock who knocked our socks off with harmonica playin from heaven. I'm afraid though that Shakey might think we're a little tame after last night, so we're hoping he'll come back sometime for a full blown folkface experience.
we're planning to meet here again on Friday night this week, the 5th of June, starting at 6 or whenever you can make it after that. The country squires will be back then and Muffy will still be in town before her Canadian jaunt.
I'm posting four(!) news songs on gmail for yall, that Muff and I both like alot, and that I think we could all enjoy as more group-like songs for singing together on the choruses and such. We did one of them last night already.
see you Friday! bring booze or dessert or a hunk of cheese...

Ike presents FF news

#1 shout out to sam P - awesome show girl! way to reprezent! sparton lives!

and #2 welcome back home to miss PT!

...and so on allen street there was some talk about the coming weekend in terms of timing, transportation, etc. PT and i went to chinatown and discussed the options. a good one seems to be coming up saturday at a leisurely pace, we could play a little music in the eve, get something to eat, sleep, and put in a full day of FF on sunday with a break for swimmin hole, and then cook up a feast for sunday night, drink likker and play all night round the firepit.

ike will be up there from friday afternoon til tuesday morning. ike suggests yall maybe look into renting a car, that might save money on the train. and if you do take the train of course ike'll come get yas. might be good to coordinate so we dont have to make multiple trips across the river. and if it be by train, remember it may well sell out or simply get more expensive as the days pass.

also -- we can talk more about it on tuesday night on white street.

come back FF, come back!

hi yall,
I'll be traveling back to NYC on Tuesday. So I hope everyone's good for 4pm on the 17th at my place. I have the biggest brush pile here anyone's ever seen, but it rains every day so I can't burn it. I'll try to post some pics soon so you can appreciate my handiwork. Miss you all. more later.

Rock and Roll Is...

Last night I saw the New York Dolls play a private gig at the John Varvatos store at 315 Bowery. Some of you may recall that address as formerly belonging to a rock and roll club known as CBGB. It's still CBGB in some regards but it is a store. All in all a very surreal experience.

memorial day FF weekend in athens???

the gay deer and gay shed await us.

folkface lives!

hi loves,
I am surviving the destruction of all kinds of pervasive plants, and miss you all....I still don't know exactly when I'm coming back to NYC, but wanted to check in now and say that I can definitely host folkface on May 17th. I know stringbean will be away then, and she will be sorely missed, but I know I'll be home by then. There is an idea of a gathering on the 10th floating around, when we could have our stringbean, but sounds like not our ike,,,, but I don't know yet if I'll be back by then.... I'll keep yall posted this week, and let us know of your availabilities.
all folked up with nowhere to go,
Lynxy

Let's Go Out And Have Some Fun

I'm sorry I won't be able to make Sunday - well, I could probably show up later, maybe around 8...
How about we go on a Folkface field trip on Friday, April 24th? The beautiful Julie Doiron is playing at Cakeshop. She's from Canada! She lives in New Brunswick! I love her, love her, love her. Patricia you could do a good job of singing her songs...
Cut and paste - it won't let me link: http://www.myspace.com/juliedoiron

Oooh and last night's Great Lake Swimmers show was heavenly. I adore them. So mellow, so beautiful - I love playing with them so much...lucky me, lucky me! Guess which one I have a crush on:

next folkface

dearies,
let's meet here at 4pm on Sunday. Kate will have to go early for her every six weeks or so hoohah, and I don't think Peter is back yet, but we may have a guest appearance by Shakey Dave Pollack, an amazing harmonica player (of M.Shanghai and more), and it will be great to hang and play as always. I will be out of town for the next two or three Sundays after that.....
I have sent yall two songs via gmail, one is my favorite Vic Chesnutt song ever, Woodrow Wilson. I share this with you because I trust that you won't complain that its the most depressing song ever written. I think its amazing. Also I've sent Cinder and Smoke by Iron and Wine. I'd like to try to write something for folkface along these lines....tell me what you think. I like the floaty ending.
If you can come on Sunday, booze or dessert would be great to bring. Look forward.

next folkface

the next folkface will be here on Sunday the 12th at 4pm. I hope everyone can come. Word seems to be getting out, and a couple more luminaries have mentioned they want to join us sometime soon. I hope you are all okay with guest appearances. I am as long as no one calls the police. I've missed yall this week and look forward.

even more famous stringbean

well this guy seems to be the real deal, he appeared on hee-haw. I also think he should be credited for starting that whole pants falling down thing.

The first String Bean

There is a track on this rekkid attributed to a singer called String Bean; Bobby Colquitt & String Bean doing Million Dollar Play Girl. I heard it on WFMU.

The Competition

Looks like we have some serious competition, y'all...

FF Field Trip: Lucinda Black Bear

This is a folk-friendly outfit I played in long, long ago. They are gigging at Hill Country: touristy kind of place but good BBQ. Free show. They go on at 9. I have been asked to bring my accordion and play a song but I don't know if that is going to work seeing as how the box is at Lynxy's and I don't know the songs anymore. Might be fun to hang, though.

see you sunday...

you forgot one

NAME WARS!

two names on the table. very quick logos done by putting the name in google and picking the most obvious best choice image and using the same typeface for both. it's totally democratic, kids. and i'm not saying we have to or should use japanese schoolgirls. likewise i am not saying we have to use dale evans.

p.s.

I can't make the link cut and paste. It's Rhapsody.com, then do a search for Any Old Time String Band. The name of the album is I Bid You Goodnight.

Peter can play the fiddle part on the accordion to great effect in my humble opinion.

Any Old Time String Band

I found the entire album of the Any Old Time String Band online at Rhapsody:

The songs I really love are

Valse de Orphelin
C-U-B-A
Pasadena

I'd do any of e'm, but Valse de Orphelin seems the most suited to our needs. We can think about the several other Cajun songs as well. Or any of these songs.

FUCK I wish I could play Cajun fiddle. Anyone have any quick tips? Sam?

sunday, march29

so we're planning to meet here on sunday at 4pm. I'll cook (something!) if you guys bring wine. I think we should all bring new songs, written or found, just to think about what we want to do, and to keep figuring out what we can do best. I've been learning two TVZs, Highway Kind and If I Needed You, and I think Peter's on board with these. I'll bring more fresh-baked songs too. Kate has mentioned posting some cajun songs, which I think is a great idea. We'll have plenty to do....I'm really looking forward to it....
If you can post any songs ideas beforehand to gmail, then we can be familiar by sunday, which is real helpful. just leave a note on the mohair panties.

this sunday, March 22, a school night quickie

this sunday afternoon Sam and Kate and Patricia are going to blend heavenly harmonies in a workshop somewhere in Brooklyn. after that I'm going to meet Peter here for a genius tank folkface writing summit (ok, we're just going to talk about what we want to write) around six thirty or so, with some takeout. anyone who can come is very welcome, as I'm sure we'll be playing a few songs too.
and the 29th looks good from here. will post again.

you are not needed now

YOU ARE NOT NEEDED NOW by TVZ
key of C
verse basically goes: C G Dm F G
there are some passing notes maybe
but this is pretty close since i am doing this
without a guitar, also need to check lyrics

Well, the C birds were talking G all at once
and the Dm old man mowing F down his lawn
G he didn't look like much too bad a C guy
i said hang on now, something's wrong,
your blues, they do seem to be gone
Heaven ain't bad, but you don't get nothing done.

chorus: E F C G C
Lay down your head awhile
You are not needed now, you are not needed now

Well, Allison laid an egg on me
and every time I turn around
it's swimming through the air above my bed
I told Miss Hicks and she said "Fine,
as long as you're back in your room on time,
I keep you clean and the girls will keep you fed."

Between the blankets made of wool
the trains roll by every half an hour
and the body can get no restin' done, that's true
so I do my best, as best I can
thinkin' big and making plans
and wondering where them trains are rolling to

Lay down your head poor boy
feel how the ground does move
hear how them drivers sing

Well, goodbye friends, it's time to close
everybody knows that's the way it goes
where was it you lived in case I'm ever there
Well, three doors down and two behind
and it gets a little bit out of hand sometimes
don't let it fool you into thinkin you don't care

Lay down your head and fly
I'll quietly pass you by
you won't even see me go

If I thought about it long enough
I just might make some kind of move
watchful eyes are too hard on the soul
With the smoke house just across the way
and this fog upon the light of day
I would be hard pressed comin' up with where to go

Lay down your head poor boy
feel how the ground does move
hear how them drivers sing
What now, my darling one
go find a little fun
you are not needed now.

"Townes Van Zandt is the greatest songwriter who ever lived, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." - Steve Earl

(i think S.E. might have said this in my friend margaret's doc about TVZ, called Be Here To Love Me, which i highly recommend)

Folkface Minestrone

Saute 6 minced cloves of garlic and 2 chopped onions in lots of olive oil in a big soup pot. Pour in 2 quarts of chicken broth, 3/4 cup wine, and 1 28-ounce can fire-roasted tomatoes. Add a box of baby portobellos, sliced, 2 chopped large-ish carrots, 1 chopped medium zucchini, 1 can of drained, rinsed kidney beans, 4 chopped Yukon gold potatoes, 1 bunch chopped fresh oregano, 4 cups fresh baby spinach, and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil then simmer, uncovered, for 1 1/2 hours, adding more chicken broth if needed. Serve with grated parmesan cheese.

I probably forgot something. You can also substitute or add string beans, chickpeas, green peas, kale, pasta, fresh basil, broccoli, etc. YUM.
stupendous Ike!

Folkface was taken!

Believe it or not, Folkface was not available as a blog name. We are going to have to look into that. In the meantime, we can use this blog to post lyrics, MP3s, thoughts, gossip, and most importantly, recipes.
